There is something magical about hats. You can put on a hat and become anyone you want whenever you want. My name is Michelle and I am a hattie©, a hataholic© if you will.
My addiction started at a very young age, probably in the womb. My Mom was a hattie© too. My fondest memories of my Mom are of watching her dress to go out and placing the latest fashionable hat upon her crown. She was a goddess from head to toe. It’s sad that the only picture I have of her with a hat is from before I was born and it resembles a flying saucer. Playing dressup always included diving into her collection of hatboxes and modeling her treasures.
As a child I loved Easter. Not for the candy or chocolate but because I would get a brand new Easter bonnet. Getting that hat off my head afterward could prove to be challenging. When I got older and could buy my own hats…lets just say I had one for every occasion and one for every mood. I had warm hats, sexy hats, fancy hats, fun hats, hats that would cheer me up, hats that could help me hide. When I lost my hair from chemo I didn’t bother with wigs. I had enough hats to keep me covered throughout the treatment.
The hattitude does seem to be in my blood. My sister Pat has always been a hattie© too.
And the next generation had their moments as well.
When my niece asked me to help her find a hat I swear a tear rolled down my cheek.
For my Grandniece’s 2nd birthday in March I bought her a hat. She loved that hat! In fact, early in the summer her Mom skyped me to ask me where I had found the hat I had bought her. When I asked her why, her answer warmed my heart from my toes to the top of my head. Apparently she wore it all the time…everywhere! I didn’t see the problem. My niece said,
“No. You don’t understand. We can’t get her to take it off. She sleeps in it. She swims in it and she wears it with everything. The hat is starting to rot on her head and it’s starting to smell funny, but we can’t get her to part with it. I thought if I could find another one (or more than one) we could get her to swap it out.”
Of course, I went straight back to Macy’s and picked up four of them. Two with pink trim and two with purple trim. Problem solved, everybody was happy.
It seems that Ellee has had a chat with the newest member of our family, her little cousin Logan. Together they are carrying on the family hattitude.
Great pictures! You are gorgeous in those hats.
And I didn’t even have to pay you to say that! Of course this attitude will make your life a little easier.
Prepare to groan: hats off to you for a delightful post.
Logan bears a striking resemblance to Brad Pitt in his chapeau, and Ellee is just beyond adorable, as are all of these pictures.
No groaning here. I’m glad you like it. I will have to let Logan’s Mom know he is a Brad Pitt look alike. They are both adorable.
I bought a hat in Germany this weekend Michelle – two sayings – if you want to get ahead get a hat and also Never hit a man with a hat on – I don’t have a clue either!
They both work for me. I want to see you in your hat.
One day perhaps!
Oh I love it! I’ve always wished that women wore hats more often. I wear them occasionally but am often too self conscious!
Never be self conscious wearing a hat. You should hold your head a little higher and smile a little brighter. You get to be like a character in a play and everyone loves it.
What fun to see the pics and all those hats. I love hats but it seems like the main occasion I wear one is a ball cap that I wear to cover up “helmet hair” after a long bike ride 🙂
Ball caps count! Especially to remedy “helmet hair”. When I use to ride I got fed up with helmet hair and took the album cover of an Annie Lennox into the hairdresser. Her hair was bright orange and 1/4 inch long all over. I just said I want this. It was the best hairdo ever for the bike. 😉
Finding a hat that fits ‘just right’ is always a bit of a challenge…
I’m beginning to suspect I have a very misshaped head!
🙂
Isn’t that the truth. I always found that difficult as well. That’s why when I did find one that fit “just right” then it was mine. I don’t think mine is a misshaped head but it is a pretty big head for a girl.
Yep! Especially now, it´s all about a nice woolly hat ! 🙂
I must be getting cool there now. I confess, I will wear a hat any time of year but cozy winter hats are special.
It has been winter since October! It´s not getting any warmer at all.
I love the warmth that winter clothes distill.
Super cute! I love your “hatties” coined term too! 🙂
Thank you. I think we all have a little fun making up words to fit these days. 😉
My mother is a Hattie. I can’t wait to tell her that term, she’ll love it. Like you she always had a hat for every occasion and spread the hat love to the grandchildren. Great post!
I guess you could say we “pass the hat” to the next generation. 😉 Thanks.
Well do I remember adventures with Mum’s hatbox, though somehow I never looked as stylish as she did – something to do with the shape of my face? – and gave up when a hatbox became an untenable accessory for budget travellers 🙂
So true. The treasured hat boxes were as much fun if not more that the actual hats. I honestly believe there is a hat for everyone. Maybe you just haven’t found each other yet 😉
Possibly! Now i’m growing my hair again perhaps I’ll have better luck finding my hat-mate 🙂
Some people look really good in hats, and you are one. I so wish I could wear hats with big, floppy brims, but in Hawaii’s tradewinds, they would keep blowing off. The best I can do is a visor with plastic band that’s tight around my head. Even then sometimes I have to hold onto it.
Do you recognize the the area in the second picture. That was taken at the Maui Islander in Lahaina. That hat stayed on pretty good. Unfortunately, I did lose one the next time I was in Maui when I was crossing over to Lanai on a catamaran. I was very sad, it was a favourite.
I’ve got a whole drawer of caps. If I was wearing them before my hair started to leave, it means I like them, not that I’m wearing it because the hair is jumping ship, right?
I would agree with that. I really don’t think you need any excuses to wear a hat/cap.
You are gorgeous in the hats! I love hats also, look good in them, but don’t wear them often, unless it’s on a body of water, or it’s cold.
Thank you. This is me blushing. Of course most of the pics are from long ago. There is one there that was taken for the blog. You look great with or without a hat so wear them when the mood strikes.
Michelle, I love this post! You’re quite lovely in all those hats. It makes me want to wear one. I never wear hats, except a running hat and maybe out in the sun. That’s funny about your niece and the hat rotting on her head! She’s a cutie in all those hats. Great pictures!
Oh, thank you Amy. You are too kind.
I keep telling everyone your hat is out there somewhere. You just have to find each other. Then you will be just like Ellee. Well maybe not so stubborn. You probably won’t sleep in it or wear it into the pool or the lake.
Thanks! I’ll keep looking for my hat. Or, maybe it will choose me. 🙂
What fun pictures! I love hats too, but I rarely wear them. I wish someone would bring them back into fashion like Jackie O did for her generation. Maybe you can!!!
Jackie O definitely did the world of fashion a favour with her hattitude. I would love to see that happen again.
I think hats look great – on other people, and you do look fantastic in all those hats. But I would never wear one myself. I hate to wear hats. Well, that’s probably an overstatement, but you know what I mean. There is only one thing I dislike even more than wearing a hat and that’s a tie. As a matter I have made never wear a tie my only principle in life. What kind of principle is that, you may ask. I basically don’t believe in principles, I believe they make you stop considering other options, makes you unnecessarily stubborn (and I am enough stubborn as it is). At the same time a man (or woman) of principles is a supposedly a good thing to be, too. Thus that’s what I am…
Thanks Otto. I think most of the time I look silly but I like how they make me feel more than how they make me look. Sometimes I feel like a completely different person when I put on a hat and there is something empowering about it.
I don’t think I could ever picture you in a tie. I would have to agree that they are very confining. Wouldn’t you hate to have a job that you had to wear one every day?
You are absolutely right. I am not much for anything that tastes of routines…
I love it! These are gorgeous hats you featured Michelle! I also love your Winter snow falling on your blog. 🙂 You know, sometimes I wish I had an “invisible” hat… one that you couldn’t see and would hide the person wearing it too. 🙂 I would love one of those right about NOW!
If you find out where to get that kind of hat please let me know ASAP. I can’t tell you the times that would of come in handy. 😉
Great post Michelle. Hats off to you. 😀
Cool pics!
My hair is fading quick, so I need to get a few cool hats!
There’s at least one hat out there for everyone.
